Mr. Simpson is a native of Atlanta, Georgia. He began his
career in the area of criminal justice after receiving a Bachelor
of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from West Georgia in
1986. After working in a maximum-security prison for a total
of four years and observing so many individuals who had ruined
their lives, he decided that he could become a part of the
solution. He set out to help young people avoid having to
serve time in a correctional institution or in the penal system.
He re-entered the State University of West Georgia and obtained
certification to teach middle grades. He embarked upon his
career as an educator in 1991. He taught in elementary school
for two years and in middle school for three years. He experienced
tremendous success as a teacher, mentor, and leader.
Feeling that he could be a more effective leader as a school
administrator, Mr. Simpson enrolled in West Georgia for a
third time to pursue a Master of Education Degree in Administration
and Supervision. In 1996, he was promoted to assistant principal
of discipline, instruction, and attendance at Miller Grove
Middle School. After two years, he was assigned to Stone Mountain

he completed his Specialist in Educational Leadership in 2002,
and earned a Doctorate of Education in Supervision and Leadership
at the University of Sarasota in February of 2004.
In March of 2004, Dr. Simpson was appointed as principal at
the new Miller Grove High School. He was instrumental in establishing
a foundation and creating a high culture of learning for the
students in this community while instilling a renewed interest
in school spirit. His primary goal for his school is to provide
a learning environment “free of distractions, free of disruptions,
and providing teachers an opportunity to teach and maximize
on the students’ opportunities to learn. He strongly encourages
students to work far beyond expectations and excel in the
areas of standardized tests and academic achievement. Above
all, he stresses character and self-motivation as viable tools
to achieve personal success. As a result of his success at
Miller Grove, Dr. Simpson has most recently been appointed
to the position of Area Assistant Superintendent for the DeKalb
County School System.
He is involved in a myriad of professional and public service
organizations. Among these are the National Association of
Educators, Georgia Association of Educators, DeKalb Association
for Secondary School Administrators, and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity,
Incorporated who honored him as the Citizen of the Year for

Inc., for the Educational Development Award and the Administrator
of the Year by the DeKalb County Counselors Association and

a public speaker and has been a motivational speaker for numerous
elementary and high school students, faculty, and staff members.
He has also been invited to serve as guest speaker for banquets,
conferences, seminars, and graduation exercises throughout
the state of Georgia. However, his daughter Skyla, and son,
Chandler, are his pride and joy.
Dr. Simpson’s accomplishments are attributed to determination,
diligence, dedication, and tenacity. He has adopted as a personal
motto “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.”

and was even incarcerated. Beaty found a mentor, Bobby Garrett.
Garrett was the director of a non-traditional school, West
End Academy (a Communities In Schools non-traditional school).
As a result of Garrett’s efforts, Beaty graduated from West
End Academy, earned a Bachelor’s degree from Stillman College
and a Master’s in Aerospace Education from Middle Tennessee
State University. From there he went on to have a stellar
20-year career in the Army and rose to the rank of Lieutenant
